All pupils at RGS study French to iGCSE level, and in Year 8 they have the option of learning German or Spanish as a second language.
Pupils learn to understand, speak, read and write accurately and are introduced to the culture and way of life in French, German and Spanish speaking countries. The iGCSE course is aimed at enabling pupils to cope confidently with living in another European country and they will study topic areas such as food and drink, travel, fitness, schools, shopping, hobbies, the home, meeting people, birthdays and holidays. Information Technology is widely used throughout the department.
In the Sixth Form boys can study French, German and Spanish to AS and A Level and in Year 12 they can learn a new language such as Japanese, Chinese Mandarin and Italian
The Modern Languages Department strongly encourages boys to take part in group or individual exchanges or language study trips, and each year about 250 pupils participate. In June there is a 5-day French/History study trip for Year 9 pupils to Northern France. Each year about 170 pupils take part.
In Years 9 and 10, pupils may take part in the German exchange with pupils from the Ratsgymnasium in Osnabrück. This exchange programme has now been running for 45 years! Those studying Spanish have the opportunity of a study trip to Spain in Year 10.
Each December some 40 Sixth-Formers take part in European Work Experience in Toulouse.
The Modern Languages Department has a very strong tradition of success in public examination results, and we pride ourselves on the variety of teaching techniques used and the high standard of languages skills that our pupils acquire.
