Meet the Team

Boarding Staff

All boarders in Fraser Youens House are in the care of a team of resident house staff and each boarder will be assigned to a Personal Tutor.

Each Housemaster and House Tutor has a group of up to 10 boys drawn from all year groups within the boarding house. He/she will not only take personal responsibility for the boarders academic progress but also for his well being within the house.

Matron holds a surgery in the boarding house three times a day and will make doctor’s appointments, emergency dental appointments, arrange orthodontic work and collect prescriptions.

The boarding Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day running of the boarding house and is in charge of the domestic staff.

House Staff

Fraser Youens House has a number of staff that help the boarders in their daily lives. There are three resident house staff who permanently live at Fraser Youens. Mr Jon Scourfield, Head of Boarding, Mrs Ginny Gallagher, Academic Housemistress and Mr Tom Hollyer, Pastoral Housemaster. All three staff have specific roles within boarding along with the responsibility of a small tutor group of boarders.

Jon Scourfield, Head of Boarding

Jon took up the position as Head of Boarding in 2008. Jon is married to Sarah (a teacher who is also a Boarding tutor) and they have two daughters, Jon is an avid reader when he has the time and is passionate about most sports. Jon went to school in Yorkshire before studying a Physical Education degree at Borough Road (now Brunel University). Initially after leaving college, Jon juggled professional rugby league with his teaching career, however a knee injury put paid to the rugby and he joined RGS as Head of Year 7. He has also been master in charge of Athletics, Head of Rugby and a Head of Year in the Sixth Form. Jon loves travelling and has led overseas ski trips and tours abroad visiting South America, Australasia and Africa. If you have any queries about any aspect of Boarding, Mr Scourfield will be able to point you in the right direction.

Ginny Gallagher, Academic Housemistress

Ginny was educated at Hereford Cathedral School before reading Mathematics with Education at Homerton College, Cambridge. She joined the RGS in 2004 after enjoying a short spell teaching in India. Ginny has been part of the Boarding community since 2005, as a House Tutor and now Housemistress. In addition to teaching Mathematics, she is an officer in the CCF (Army) and involved in Duke of Edinburgh and World Challenge Expeditions. Ginny is married to David, who is a Head of Year and a fellow RGS Maths teacher. They have a young daughter, who was born in 2014. Although Mrs Gallagher has responsibility for Academic matters within Boarding she is clearly there to support all of the boarders in a huge variety of ways. Younger boarders might want to know that she holds the Boarding pocket money account.

Tom Hollyer, Pastoral Housemaster

Tom was a boarder at Tonbridge School in Kent and studied Geography, History and Politics at A-Level before achieving a degree in Sociology from Newcastle University. He has been a Geography teacher at the RGS since 2010 and has organised field trips to Lulworth Cove, the Lake District and China, led World Challenge trips to Iceland and Kilimanjaro as well been part of three senior rugby tours to South Africa and Canada. Tom is a keen sportsman, playing rugby, cricket and golf as well as completing the London Marathon in 2011. He coaches the U16A team for Rugby and was a Boarding Tutor for four years before becoming a Housemaster. Tom is married to Kate who is a lawyer at a London law firm specialising in UK immigration, asylum and human rights. Tom manages the Boarding Prefects, the House Blog and runs the house activity system. If you have any suggestions of activities you love or want to try, speak to Mr. Hollyer.

Boarding Tutors

There are eight boarding tutor groups within Fraser Youens House. Boarding tutors in addition to the Housemasters/ Housemistress are teachers at RGS who in the main are resident on site but not within Fraser Youens House. They have different subject specialisms and this helps supports the boys both academically and pastorally.

Jenny Crowter

Jenny is the current Head of Physics at RGS and shares a boarding tutor group with Mrs Scourfield. She loves exploring and getting involved with outdoor pursuits and within school she is an RAF officer for the CCF and involved with Duke of Edinburgh and World Challenge. This has allowed her to travel, including trips to Ecuador in 2013 and Tanzania in 2015 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. She studied Physics at Oxford University, where she also took part in many sports and represented her college in rowing and trampolining. Jenny is often found with some of our brightest Sixth formers who are asking for advice with a Mathematical problem and her revision sessions for the Pre University Physics students are infamous.

Tim Fossey

Tim teaches Maths and joined the boarding team in 2014 having completed a Mathematics PGCE the previous academic year. Tim originally studied Chemistry at Southampton University and graduated in 2002. Prior to switching to a teaching career he worked in the City of London as a recruitment provider to the banking sector. Tim is a keen sports enthusiast and although his own rugby playing days are probably over he still enjoys touch rugby, staff football and running. He completed the Edinburgh marathon 3 years ago and states that he has no intention of running another one. Travelling is a huge passion of Tim’s and he has been lucky enough to hike in the Himalayas, canoe the Zambezi, dive in the Red Sea and drive from the tip of South America to the northern coast of    Alaska.

James Young

After seven years at Hornsea School and Language College James went on to study Natural Sciences for four years at the University of Cambridge before staying a further year to complete his PGCE. He returned part time to complete his Master of Education. He started working at RGS in 2010 as a Teacher of Chemistry and has been a Boarding Tutor since 2012. James is the Subject Leader for Chemistry and is also involved in U12 Rugby. Mr Young’s boarding revision sessions for Chemistry have been a huge success. Outside of school he enjoys running, especially those gruelling events with mud and obstacles.

Antony Silvey

Antony joined the teaching staff at RGS in 2014 after completing a PGCE and a BA in Spanish at Birmingham University as well as spending a year in Huelva, Andalucía. Antony is an old boy of the school having played in the same 1st XV as England international Christian Wade. Antony teaches Spanish to A level and French to our junior students. Antony is a keen rugby player but loves nothing less than to discuss the finer aspects of Spanish cuisine. As an old boy, Antony can pass on many handy hints to our boarders.

Sarah Scourfield

Sarah lives in Fraser Youens House along with Jon and their two young daughters. Sarah is a primary KS2 teacher and prior to changing her career to teaching, worked in the corporate events and conference industry in London. She studied International Politics and Strategic Studies at Aberystwyth University and a few years later completed her PGCE at Oxford Brookes. Sarah has travelled around the World, is an enthusiastic runner, has fulfilled a childhood aspiration of running the London Marathon and more recently ran the gruelling Boxing Day Chevin Chase Race. Sarah’s top priority in boarding is to create a warm and friendly environment for the boys while they are studying and living away from home.

Jamie Rizk

Jamie teaches maths and joined the boarding house in September 2015 at the same time he joined RGS. Jamie completed a mathematics and education degree at Edge Hill in 2014. He is a keen sports enthusiast and has taken victorious RGS rugby and cricket teams. Jamie runs various competitions within his department and the introduction of 'Maths Battles' has been well received. Outside of school Jamie plays rugby for High Wycombe and is a keen follower of his home team Leyton Orient.

Dan Druce

In 2016, having completed his PGCE at the University of Oxford, Dan joined RGS as a teacher of Mathematics and Computing. Dan represented his University sailing teams as both an undergraduate and a postgraduate. Sailing is a large part of Dan’s life, alongside being a mathematics teacher, he is both a Senior Sailing and Windsurfing instructor. As a lover of adventure, Dan frequently seeks new challenges, past challenges include: Cycling from Paris to Salisbury on fixies; The Three Peaks Challenge and running up and down Mt Snowdon. Dan loves sports. Alongside the numerous water sports he is involved in, he is an avid runner competing in countless events.
