Hockey

RGS Hockey has a long-standing place among the sports offered within the school. The hockey department works from the ethos of providing excellent hockey coaching to all pupils regardless of experience or ability. With lessons and teams across every year group, boys have the opportunity to play at a standard of competition that suits their ability and desire.

We currently offer outdoor hockey to boys from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form, with ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams in Years 7-9 feeding into an U16 team (Years 10-11) and an U18 team (Years 12-13).

The school has its own astroturf mini pitch. We also have an indoor hockey pitch used extensively by our U16 and U18 teams.

An exciting development in 2015 saw work completed on our own full-size all weather pitch: we broke ground in April 2015 and the pitch was open for use in late October that same year!

Interschool hockey

RGS has a proud tradition of competitive hockey fixtures against some of the top-performing schools in the south. Continued success in national competitions, both outdoor and indoor, has kept the RGS as a leading force in schoolboy hockey. Here are some of our latest results:

  Competition Indoor/Outdoor Age group Placing
2016 National Super 6s Championship Indoor U18 Runners-up
2012 National Schools Championship for Boys Outdoor U14 Runners-up
2010 Boys' Schools National Indoor Championship Indoor U16 Runners-up
2010 National Schools Championship for Boys Outdoor U16 Finalists

County, Regional and National hockey

As well as representing the school, boys have been supported by the hockey department in their ambitions to play at representative levels. We also have several boys in England Hockey National Age Group Squads (NAGS) and playing at Junior Development Centres (JDCs) and Junior Academy Centres (JACs).

Our most famous hockey-playing Old Boy is Jon Wyatt who captained Great Britain at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jon kindly came back to RGS in February 2015 to launch the fundraising for new pitches and classroom renovations – read more about the day here.

How families can support hockey at RGS

Fundraising through the RGS Friends of Hockey

Following its pivotal involvement in RGS’s successful 12-year campaign to gain planning permission for the all weather pitch, The Organisation to Support Hockey (TOSH) bows out triumphantly.

However, hockey at RGS still needs parents’ support to fund essentials such as equipment, competition entry fees and transport costs. The hockey staff would also greatly appreciate a budget for individual items they would find useful, such as the video camera purchased recently for analysis sessions. And with the arrival of the all weather pitch, the boys could benefit enormously from regular training sessions with guest coaches.

If you would like to know more about the RGS Friends of Hockey, or better still, could volunteer to help with fundraising in any way, large or small, please contact us here.

Join the RGS Friends of Hockey for 2016-17 by completing our subscription form – just £40 per year via cheque, Parentpay or standing order.

Enabling boys to play outside of school

All RGS hockey players are strongly advised to play for a club as part of their continued development. The school has particularly close links with Wycombe Hockey Club, Gerrards Cross Hockey Club and Amersham & Chalfont Hockey Club. Many of our boys play competitive junior and men’s hockey for these clubs every weekend. The quality of coaching is of a high standard and the clubs put much time and effort into their junior sections.
