40 Sports Issue 12 July 2024 The RGS Gazette Thomas: What is the greatest sporting achievement? On a general level, I would believe that winning a gold medal for your country in the Olympics has to be up there with the greatest sporting achievements that you can reach. This is due to the prestige of the event, as it only happens once every 4 years, as well as you representing the people of your country. Furthermore, I think this constitutes achieving the highest level of prestige in your discipline, so for boxing, being undisputed champion of the world, and for golf, winning the green jacket. However, you can take it to a personal level or look at a different aspect, like holding a world record. For example, Usain Bolt can sit there and say that no human has ever been faster than him across 100m. Taking this into account, I think that holding a world record in your specific discipline is the greatest sporting achievement possible. Mr. Wayne: Why didn’t Southgate pick Jack Grealish? Gareth Southgate has said himself that he and his staff went over the choice to leave out Grealish over and over again, with Southgate being sad to omit him from the England squad. In my opinion, I believe that his performance at Man City this year didn’t merit him a place in the final England squad. Grealish said himself during the season that he doesn’t feel as though he is playing as well this year compared to last year. This is for a variety of reasons, including not feeling confident in his own head, not being up to it in training and being put off at the start of the season with an injury. Furthermore, I feel as though Southgate felt like he had better options to pick from for the England squad, leading him to go with the other option, leaving Grealish out of the 26man squad that he brought to Germany. Zac: What is the most dangerous sport? In my opinion, bull riding is the most dangerous sport in the world. On average, 1 in 15 bull riders experience a serious injury, with 21 professional bull riders dying as a result of the sport since 1990. These statistics alone show how dangerous and taxing the sport is on the human body, resulting in my belief that it is the hardest sport to compete in. Oli: Did Speed ruin the suii? I don’t think that Speed did ruin Ronaldo’s signature celebration, due to the amount of publicity it received. The celebration was already widely renowned, however, when Speed started doing it, the amount of people that started doing his celebration outside of the world of football heavily increased. Although, I do think it may have lost some of its meaning. This is due to some people tying the celebration to Speed, rather than Ronaldo himself, leading to a loss of the true meaning of his celebration. Gareth Southgate (2024) Bullriding has become increasingly popular in the USA (2023) Ronaldo performs the signature celebration (2022)
