Biology
The RGSHW Biology curriculum is designed to challenge students to reach their potential whilst also making sure that learning is stimulating and enjoyable. We aim to inspire students about the living world and the fascinating biological processes that take place within it. Biology is highly relevant to today’s society and therefore we believe it is essential that students learn up to date examples and case studies. There is a strong focus on practical investigative skills and teaching the scientific method to ensure students are inquisitive, curious and have a balanced view point based on the information available. Use of IT is at the forefront of our teaching, utilising Microsoft OneNote.
A Level
Biology is a very popular choice for students at A level. We follow the Edexcel B specification which enables high level Biology to be taught in a detailed, investigative manner that prepares students for further education. The biological topics being studied range from cellular biochemistry to whole organism biology and how organisms link to the environment. Students have the opportunity to attend a residential field trip at the start of Year 13 in order to develop ecological techniques. Topics being studied include:
- Cells and Viruses
- Biological Molecules
- Classification
- Biodiversity
- Circulation
- Control Systems
- Respiration
- Microbiology
- Modern Genetics
