Boarding Activities
Children make significant progress from their starting points. For example, children new to boarding quickly grow in confidence, they go on to establish positive relationships, become more sociable and take part in many activities. To ensure a comprehensive boarding experience for their students, they offer a wide range of organised weekly activities for boys to take part in.

We also give students access to table-tennis, table football and pool tables within the living accommodation at Fraser Youens as well as the option to play board games, watch television and use the ICT facilities during their free time after school.
Junior Activities
All Year 7 and 8 boarding students are expected to participate fully in Junior Activities every Monday to Thursday between 5.15pm and 6.00pm.
Past activities have included Archery, Badminton, Cooking, Climbing and Dodgeball (to name a few!) and all boys are invited to put forward their own suggestions for options that can be added to the programme.
Senior Activities
All Year 9 – 11 boys are expected to attend supervised activities chosen by the students on Monday – Wednesday between 6.00pm and 7.00pm with the option of an additional non-compulsory session on Thursday at the same time.
The students in Year 10 – 13 are able to use the sports facilities from Monday to Wednesday between 9.00pm and 10.00pm and can also attend an optional session at the same time on a Thursday.
Senior Boys are also eligible to use the Fitness Suite every day between 5.15pm – 7.00pm and 9.00pm to 10.00pm.
Whole House Activities
There are a number of house tournaments held throughout the year, which include a House Obstacle Course, Quizzes and Debates as well as a variety of sporting events. All boarders are expected to take part in these activities and to compete within mixed age teams.
All boys have the option to go swimming on Tuesday and Thursday between 6.00pm and 7.00pm and to take part in a number of mixed activities in the Sports Hall every Friday between 8.00pm and 9.30pm.
Weekend (Full Boarding) Activities
The Sports Hall is available for use for mixed activities between 8.00pm and 10.00pm on Saturday and between 2.00pm and 4.00pm on Sundays. We normally run a sports activity one weekend and a non-sporting activity the following weekend.
The fitness suite is available to Year 10 – 13 students (who have successfully completed induction training) on Fridays between 6.00pm and 10.00pm and on both weekend days between 8.30am and 10.00pm.
Weekend Trips
Here at RGS we aim to provide a whole host of exciting weekend activities for boarding activities, including trips to Longridge Activity Centre, the Natural History Museum for ice-skating, Rush Trampolining, Paintballing, Go Karting, theatre and cinema trips.
School Activities
Our main school sports practice sessions run during lunchtime and after school. The days and times for these activities depend on which year group the students are in and are likely to vary each week. Please check with your son for the most up to date training rota as this will change on a weekly basis.
As well as sporting activities and teams, we also run a variety of clubs both at lunch and after school. These clubs include Chess, Warhammer and Astronomy, amongst others.
Music Activities
Music lessons take place in the Main School Music Department and times will vary depending on the music teacher’s availability. The boys will have access to the school music facilities after school until 6.00pm and, depending on age and musical instrument, they can practice in the House or Dining Room extension from 8.00am to 8.30am, 4.00pm to 7.00pm and 9.00pm to 10.00pm.
