House Music 2025!

St James house has emerged victorious in a closely fought inter-house music competition, edging out a strong challenge from Windsor, due to a time penalty for the latter, in a night of dazzling performances. The annual event, held last night in the school hall, showcased an impressive array of musical talent from across all six houses, each named after a royal palace: Buckingham, Windsor, Kensington, St James, Sandringham and Balmoral.
The evening was a true celebration of musical diversity, with each house required to perform a large ensemble piece, a smaller ensemble performance, and a rock or pop band number. From soaring orchestral arrangements to intimate chamber pieces and high-energy rock anthems, the audience was treated to a feast of musical styles.
The standard of performance was exceptionally high, making the job of adjudicator, Old Boy Leo Munby, a particularly difficult one. Mumby, now a successful musical theatre performer in London’s West End, praised the students for their passion, commitment, and impressive musicianship. He commented on the remarkable range of talent on display, noting that some of the performances came from students the Head of Music wasn't even aware were musicians! This unexpected discovery highlighted the depth of hidden talent within the school community.
The competition was fierce, with each house giving their all. Windsor house delivered a particularly powerful rendition of Metalingus, while Kensington’s Shape of You was a masterclass in orchestral percussion, using the RGS vibraphone, xylophone and glockenspiel. However, it was St James’s virtuosic acapella performance of Beautiful Girl, coupled with their energetic rendition of Friends in the large ensemble piece, and their slick presentation that ultimately won over the judge.
The atmosphere throughout the evening was electric, with enthusiastic support from students, staff, and parents alike. The event was not just a competition, but a testament to the vibrant musical culture within the school and a celebration of the character and talent of its students. Congratulations to St James on their well-deserved victory, and well done to all the houses for their participation in this fantastic event. The video below doesn't do the evening justice but gives you a flavour of the winning House as well as the variety of music on offer.
